HyFlex Course FAQ

How do HyFlex courses work?

HyFlex classrooms are equipped with specialized audio/video components that are used with Zoom to broadcast the class to virtual students. Students enrolled in the virtual section of a HyFlex courseware expected to attend the lectures remotely and contribute to class discourse.

What is expected of the instructor?

The instructor is responsible for starting the Zoom meeting through Blackboard or Canvas and testing audio/visual components prior to the beginning of the class.  Additionally, instructors are responsible for maintaining equity between the virtual and in-person students. They should view the class as one “community” rather than two distinct groups.  For example, if in-person students are given a task during class, the virtual students should be given a similar task.  For more information, see  GPS Guidelines for HyFlex Courses and Interaction in HyFlex Courses.

I need training, can someone assist me?

Yes - GPS and IT offer HyFlex training sessions prior to the beginning of the semester.  Contact Scott Musfeldt (scott_musfeldt@uml.edu) if you are interested and would like to set something up.

Is there additional support?

Yes – for classes that have more than four students in the online section, GPS funds HyFlex Learning Fellows. You can recommend a Learning Fellow to support your course each week.  The Learning Fellow’s responsibilities may include audio-visual setup before class begins, monitoring the Zoom meeting for questions/issues from remote students, basic troubleshooting and escalation when issues arise, monitoring room audio and cameras, and communicating with students and the instructor.

Learning Fellows are students that faculty recommend. It is a paid position typically of 3-4 hours per week.  If you would like to hire a Learning Fellow, or you would like assistance finding a Learning Fellow, please contact Scott Musfeldt (scott_musfeldt@uml.edu).

What about International student compliance?

For sponsored international students in F-1 or J-1 visa classification who are enrolled in the 201 on campus section of a HyFlex course, it is required that they attend classes in person. For any questions on this requirement please contact the ISSO.
