Introduction to the New GPS Online Course Design Essentials
Description: GPS has officially adopted (and adapted) the Online Learning Consortium’s (OLC) Course Design Review Scorecard for use with new online courses. This is a well-known quality checklist for reviewing and improving the instructional design and accessibility of online courses based on years of research. Featuring 38 essential and exemplary standards, the GPS Online Course Design Essentials document is an adaptation of the OLC checklist, and broken down into 6 categories: Course Overview and Information, Course Technology and Tools, Design and Layout, Content and Activities, Interaction, and Assessment and Feedback.
In this session, we’ll introduce faculty to the original Scorecard, the GPS adaptation, and discuss how GPS support staff will assist faculty who are developing new online courses with implementing the standards.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain why GPS has adopted the OLC’s checklist for new online courses
- Describe the GPS Online Course Design Essentials document and overarching goals
- Opt to use the new tool to do a self-review of their own course (optional)
- Understand how GPS will be using this tool with faculty who are developing new online courses
