In Canvas, instructors can copy their own course materials, including an entire course, into a new course. This process usually only takes a minute or two, and you need to be logged into Canvas to initiate a course copy.
Note: In order to copy course content in Canvas, a user must be the Instructor in both the source course and the destination course.
- Begin in the course that you want to copy content to. This will most likely be a new course that is blank.
- On the right side of the page, select Import Existing Content.
- Under Content Type, choose Copy a Canvas Course.
- In Search for a course, type the name of the existing course you would like to copy. You could also enter the prefix or semester. Make sure the box Include completed courses is checked.
- In Content select All content.
- Check the box to Adjust Events and Due Dates*
*Required if you have assign automatic zeros for missing submissions enabled in your gradebook, otherwise optional.
- Select + Add to Import Queue. There will be a bar to show progress course copies typically take few than three minutes.

After the course copy is a success, make sure you are always aware of which course you are in before you make any changes. For example, if you just copied course content from a live Summer 2024 class, and you want to start prepping your Fall 2024 shell, be sure you aren't accidentally making changes to the live Summer 2024 class.
