Online Teaching Training

Teaching Online for the First Time

GPS offers an online training for UML faculty who are preparing to teach an online course for the first time. Our Introduction to Teaching Online course is a self-paced course offered 100% online and asynchronous. Faculty get to experience an online class as a student, while gaining proficiency with Canvas or Blackboard, developing their course materials for their online course, and learning about accessibility, copyright, and regular and substantive interaction in online courses.

Participation is reserved for faculty who have not taught online at UML before and are scheduled to teach an online course in GPS. If you are interested in teaching online, please connect with your department Chair or Coordinator so they can submit a request on your behalf.

* We recommend faculty participate in this training the semester before teaching their online course, which is typically 2-3 months from start of the term. If you'd like to join an earlier session, touch base with patrick_connell@uml.edu and we will be happy to get you started earlier.

Developing or Redeveloping an Online Course

Faculty who have been approved to develop a new online course, or who are redeveloping an existing online course, are able to work 1:1 with a GPS online course designer. This person is an expert in online courses and the technology you will be using. They will provide tailored support for your efforts, provide training and guidance, and help you meet the essential GPS standards for online courses.

Faculty will also need to complete an online, self-paced training called "Compliance in Your Online Course." This training covers accessibility requirements, copyright, and regular and substantive interaction rules for online courses.

The online course development process typically takes at least 3 months. Once the course has been approved for development or redevelopment, GPS will be in touch with you to start this process, usually the semester before you are scheduled to teach the new class. Please email Patrick_Connell@uml.edu if you have questions about developing or redeveloping an online course for GPS.
