Interaction in Live Online Courses
Interaction not only contributes to the learning process, it sustains learner engagement. Consider a student watching an hour-long lecture on their computer. If they are not expected to participate throughout the session, they are much more likely to disengage from the lecture by checking email, perusing social media, or streaming a movie.
In order to keep students engaged in your live online course, it is recommended to have several elements of interaction. In doing so, it is important to create and maintain student expectations for interaction. You can do this by announcing the interactive activities at the beginning of the session and outlining expectations prior to the activity.
